4 Simple Tips for Sealing an Asphalt Driveway

Troy Medina

Sealing an asphalt driveway not only makes it look stunning but also prevents weather elements from destroying your expensive fixture. However, do you know that this is a task you can accomplish by yourself? Well, here are four tips to get you started.

1. Handling Weeds

Any cracks on your asphalt driveway can lead to the growth of weeds between them. Since they are persistent, these weeds can force their way through any size of crack on the driveway. Therefore, before you begin sealing, ensure you remove all of them from your driveway. Consider adding a reliable weed killer into the cracks to fix this problem permanently from ever reoccurring again.

2. Clean and Fill

Larger cracks on your asphalt driveway are a significant reason to worry than the smaller ones. Massive cracks are more problematic to seal. Therefore, it's vital to clean out the weeds and other big particles such as loose asphalt thoroughly. Just like the smaller cracks, use weed killer to eliminate weeds.

After cleaning, ensure you fill these cracks before applying the seal on your asphalt concrete. You can use sand and gravel to fill up the cracks to some few inches to the top. Then add the remaining space with a crack sealer. Ideally, a crack sealer is much denser than the typical sealer for your asphalt driveway.

3. Do Your Research

There are different products currently on the market you can use to seal your asphalt driveway effectively. While some require some thinning before application, others are ready for use straight from the counter. Others may demand specific handling methods before use. Therefore, it's wise to read all the manufacturer's instructions on seal containers first to buy one that fits your requirements.

4. Mode of Application

Understanding how to apply an asphalt sealing coat is crucial. Always apply your seal from side to side (left to right) and not top to bottom. The left to right method helps achieve an even seal without stepping and tampering with it. However, in case you mistakenly step into the sealed area, use your brush over the location once more.

Asphalt driveways can help add more beauty and increase the value of your property. However, proper sealing will ensure that your driveway lasts longer without developing cracks. If you would rather hire someone else to do this work, consider contacting driveway spray sealing companies to learn more about the process.
